Bedroom Furniture Designs

Decorating
a kid's room should be fun. If possible, involve your child in the decorating process and you will end up with a room that you love. Hawaiian themed rooms can be adapted for boys or girls, depending on the colors you choose to use. Hawaiian themes can focus on the ocean, surfing, ships, sea wildlife, or combination of them all. It is also a good idea to look around your house for anything that you would like to use in the room. Mementos, vacation photographs, or an old print or painting with a beach, ship, surfer, or ocean scene would fit perfectly with a Hawaiian theme room.

First, decide upon a color scheme. Keep in mind the personality of your child and any items you want to work into the design. The Hawaiian theme can be subtle and sweet, full of sea foam greens, pale blues, and seashell pinks or bold with bright oranges, reds, and blues. For boys, use a lot of blues and greens. If your boy has a vibrant personality, you may want to add bright oranges and yellows. For girls, use pinks, reds and oranges. You can use muted colors or bright colors for a very different overall effect. Any color that is found near the ocean can also be added as a background color, such as a sandy tan, sky blue, or deep sea blue.

Color is essential to a Hawaiian room, but the shape and size of the room are important considerations in choosing a wall color. A dark wall color may make a room seem smaller and a light color can make it appear larger and brighter. If you have artistic friends or family, invite them to come over to paint a beach or ocean scene on one wall. In a Hawaiian kids room, there can never be too much pattern or color. Make a statement on the closet door by painting bright Hawaiian shirts on the front. You can also add a Hawaiian touch and texture to the floor by purchasing a jute or sisal rug.

The essence of a Hawaiian room is the free and relaxed feeling it evokes, so the style of the furniture is important. Furniture in a Hawaiian room should be casual. Casual furniture tends to have less ornate detail than formal furniture. The color of the furniture is not as important as its style, although most wood stains are better suited for Hawaiian rooms than solid colors.

Whether you are purchasing new or refinishing old furniture, you can add a Hawaiian touch to a chest of drawers, bedside table, or desk by covering the top with a layer of bamboo. Lay a bamboo blind or placemat on top of the piece of furniture and outline the size you will need to cover the surface. Carefully cut around that line and attach to the surface of the furniture using spray adhesive. You can also paint hibiscus flowers or a beach scene on a chest of drawers or bedside table to add a Hawaiian touch. A bunk bed can be turned into a tiki hut by adding bamboo blinds around the edges. To turn a boring toy box into a fun accent piece, add a piece of MDF or plywood cut in the shape of cresting waves to the back of a toy box. Cut the wood the same size as the back panel of the toy box with 6 extra inches of height. Draw cresting waves on the top of the wood, and then cut around them with a jigsaw. Paint the toy box and the waves blue. Then attach the board to the back of the toy box.

The key in Hawaiian rooms is creating a flowing informal atmosphere. Stay within the color scheme you have chosen and get creative. You can make a quilt from Hawaiian print shirts. Use large floral prints with hibiscus flowers, palm trees, or islands for bedding and window coverings. Mosquito netting is another great choice for curtains. Strings of seashells or lengths of jute twine are just a few things that can be used for curtain holdbacks in a Hawaiian theme room. Windows can also be covered with bamboo blinds. To personalize them, paint a beach scene or palm tree on the blinds.

Final touches are essential to create a relaxed island feel. Add some containers full of seashells, smooth rocks from the beach, or sand. Have your child personalize a picture frame by gluing seashells to the edge with a hot glue gun. Utilize old surfboards as a bench, shelf
, or headboard. New surfboards can be hung on the wall for decoration while they are not in use. A variety of lamps would be perfect in a Hawaiian room: paper lanterns, tiki lamps, or fishing lamps to name a few. As a final touch, purchase corkboard tiles and cut them into various shapes such as palm trees, waves, sharks, starfish, or ships. Hang them on the walls around the room or in a cluster near a study area. The colors and patterns you choose can create a vibrant or soothing Hawaiian theme room for your child. The important thing is to have fun while you create it!

Modern Bedrooms

A tea party bedroom is a perfect theme for a little girl. Such a room would train the child to relax and enjoy her free time while fueling her imagination. If you are going to create such a room, make sure it is functional. You should use the room according to its design. Therefore, you will need to make sure your tea party bedroom is actually usable for your and your child’s tea parties.

Walls: The walls should be soft colored yet somewhat formal like a cottage dining room. Look for light colored wallpapers with stripes and faded flowers. Alternatively, you can hand paint the walls with ivory and rose colored stripes. If you would like to have a mural painted in the room, a simple park scene would be nice. Then you could center your tea party area in front of it.

Window treatments
: Window treatments should be layered with sheers beneath floral panels with tiebacks. This well set a peaceful relaxing atmosphere for many leisurely afternoons.

Flooring: Since it is likely that beverages will be served in the room and spills can occur, it would be best to avoid wall-to-wall carpet. Instead, a wood or tile laminate floor would be nice with soft throw rugs near the bed and a resilient floor cloth beneath the tea party table.

Furniture: The room should be designed around a table and chair set for impromptu tea parties. If possible, set the table in the center of the floor under the light fixture. Install a dining room or teapot shaped light fixture in place of a bedroom light fixture. You can find such a light fixture in specialty shops online. A nice touch would be hand painting the table and chair set to mimic a table setting so it will look ready for a tea party even when the dishes are put away. White washed dressers and beds would compliment a tea party setting well. Use soft pastel colors allowing the furniture to fade into the background and the tea party furniture to stand out. Look for shabby chic style furnishings.

Accessories: Purchase a quality tea set complete with silverware, cups, pot, and plates. Purchase these items based on the personality of the child. If you are afraid they will break it, then buy plastic, but if a child is exposed to fine china at an early age, they will learn to take care with it. A good way to train a child to take care of fine china is to purchase two sets. One set should be fine china and displayed on shelving or a small curio cabinet. The second can be plastic, and the child will be able to graduate to the nicer set when they are ready to handle it.

For wall hangings, choose outdoor scenes of picnics and pictures of delicate little girls. In addition, arrange a wall with an assortment of decorative paints. You can paint these plates yourself, use rub-ons to decorate plain plates, or purchase miss-matched plates from the thrift store. In addition, install a shaker pegboard or a series of hooks around the room to hang floppy hats, boa’s pretty dresses and gloves to dress up in for the tea parties.

Girls Bedroom Ideas

What little girl wouldn’t love a princess themed bedroom? Whether the theme be generic or centered around a Barbie princess, here are some design elements you can use the make your princess bedroom complete.

Walls: Make your princess feel as if she is inside her own tower. Create a faux stone design on the walls, by measuring off large blocks, and color washing each block in different tone of beige. Create a couple of arched window openings in the design. In those “windows”, create scenes. One scene can be a neighboring castle complete with moat and drawbridge. Another scene can be of the mountains. At the top of the wall, create a pattern that resembles the top of a castle wall.

Window treatments
: Window treatments should be light and airy. Hang simple tab-top or tie-top sheer panels on a decorative iron rod. Instead of using a decorative rod, create a padded cornice board cut to resemble a crown. Add large jewels to each point on the crown.

Floors: You have many options for flooring in a princess room. You may want to go with comfort and use a neutral colored wall-to-wall carpet. On the other hand, you may decide to do something more authentic of a castle and use a faux stone or wood floor covered with soft throw rugs and faux animal skins.

Furniture: Furniture should be regal. Choose antique reproductions
for your dressers, tables, and chairs. For your bed, choose a four-poster bed with canopy rails. Use a multi-layered canopy treatment to create formal looking canopy bed.

Bedding: For bedding, you have two options. You can purchase princess character sheets, and pillows, and accessories or you can purchase classic pieces. For classic princess type bedding, look toward colonial and country styles that include embroidery, eyelet and lace. Create multiple layers on the bed using a dust ruffle, pillow shams, down blankets, and top it all off with a soft floral duvet and more accent pillows. Look for pillow with saying embroidered on them like “princess”, “angel”, and the child’s name.

Accessories: Finally, you will want to accessorize your little princesses’ room with special accessories.

• Look for items that feature a frog to bring in the fantasy of kissing the frog and turning him into a prince.

• Purchase Disney licensed accessories, such as pillows, picture frames, throw blankets, and trinkets each featuring a different princess, or all featuring the same princess.

• Use the colors gold and purple in the room as those are the colors of royalty.

• You can purchase a lamp with a castle shaped base, or a highly decorative lampshade.

• Instead of a ceiling fan in the room, hang a crystal chandelier.

• An interesting accessory for an older princess would be a knight standing in the corner. This could be accomplished by purchasing a suit of armor and assembling it so it would stand. You may need to purchase a clothing dummy along with the suit of armor.

• A wonderful wall hanging you can create would be a faux glass slipper and a tiara in a shadow box along with and invitation to the ball. The invitation would be made on your computer and then aged.
